Flooding causes 603 deaths and 2 million displaced people in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and other areas.

 


The Federal Government yesterday revealed that the crisis has so far killed over 603 people, displaced 1,302,589 people, and ruined over 108,393 hectares of farmlands throughout

Nigeria. This information comes as Nigerians continue to bemoan the harsh effects of flooding across the nation.

In addition, the government reported that the disaster affected all of Nigeria, injuring 2,407 people and causing partial or entire damage to 121,318 homes, 82,053 homes, 108,392 hectares of farmland, and 332,327 hectares of farmland.


Hajiya Sadiya Umar-Farouq, the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management, and social development, revealed the figures at a press conference in Abuja and urged the state governments of Anambra, Cross Rivers, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa to relocate residents in flood-prone areas to high ground.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development expressed sadness over the deaths and property damage, saying, "The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development is concerned that despite all our efforts to mitigate the effects of the 2022 flooding season, unfortunately we have recorded the loss of over 500 lives, partial or total damage to more than 90,000 houses, damage to more than 140, 000 hectares of farmland, so many roads and other infrastructures we can't even count,"
